Chair and Professor, Department of Biotechnology & Bioindustry Sciences, National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan
Dr Grace Chu-Fang Lo is Chair and Professor at the Department of Biotechnology and Bioindustry Sciences, and Director at the Center for Shrimp Disease Control and Genetic Improvement, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) in Taiwan. She received her PhD in Agriculture from the University of Tokyo, Japan. Since 1994, Grace’s collaborative work has focused on the study of white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), identified as the causative agent of one of the world’s most serious shrimp diseases. Under her guidance, her laboratory developed the WSSV screening technology and a PCR diagnostic kit that is now widely used by researchers as well as by the aquaculture industry. Grace has published the complete genome sequence for the WSSV Taiwan isolate, which is one of only three WSSV isolates whose full sequence is known. From 2005-2012, Grace chaired the ICTV (International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses ) Nimaviridae study group, and continues to work on the molecular pathogenesis of WSSV and on host-virus interactions. She currently serves as the head and expert for the OIE Reference Laboratory for White Sport Disease. She is the recipient of several awards in her chosen field and has authored over 37 papers, published in scientific journals.
